Canada, Tibetan leaders congratulate Tobgay

Canada’s High Commissioner to India and Ambassador to Bhutan Stewart Beck has congratulated Bhutan for successfully holding the country’s second parliamentary elections.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ambassador Beck said: “On behalf of all Canadians, I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of Bhutan on the country’s second National Assembly elections, which were held on July 13, 2013.

The statement further reads, “The election results have brought a change in leadership that reflects a maturing democracy with a strong opposition that can guide proceedings with its expertise and continue making significant contributions to Bhutan’s democratic institutions.”

“Canada enjoys a friendly relationship with Bhutan and looks forward to further strengthening ties through our engagement with the newly elected government,” the statement reads

Similarly, the Tibetan prime minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay sent congratulation message to People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Tshering Tobgay on his party’s victory.

“I, on behalf of the Kashag (cabinet), extend my greetings to you for winning with majority in the parliamentary elections in Bhutan,” Sangay said.

His message further reads, “I also congratulate all candidates of Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) party for the smooth and peaceful democratic transition of power and leading the country for the past five years.”
