King Jigme Khesar busy in high level talks in Delhi
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who is on official visit to India, is on high level meetings with the top leaders of Delhi.
On Tuesday he met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. During the bilateral talks, both nations strive to settle major issues, including India’s recent decision to withdraw fuel subsidy on supply of kerosene and cooking gas.
India’s withdrawal of subsidy on kerosene and cooking gas led to a steep price rise in Bhutan, a step that became a crucial issue during general elections of 2013 where the smallest opposition won the election by landslide victory.
This is the first India visit of the king and his queen after the second parliamentary elections. Ministers and senior government officials accompany them to this five-day visit.
India’s Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid and Defence Minister A.K.Antony were also present during the meeting between Singh and Wangchuk.
King Jime Khesar met with President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Congress Party chief Sonia Gandhi, minister of state for foreign affairs Praneet Kaur and Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday.
