India keen to collaborate on education with Bhutan

Bhutanese ambassador to India Major General Vestop Namgyel called on Smriti Zubin Irani, Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) in her office on Wednesday (11 June).

The Ambassador thanked HRD Minister for the cooperation extended by India in the field of education including the prestigious Nehru-Wangchuk Scholarship which has enabled talented and deserving Bhutanese students to study in India.

He sought further assistance for admission of Bhutanese students to popular Indian institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

In response, Irani said her government was keen to collaborate with Bhutan to build capacities of teachers and educational institutions and that admission of Bhutanese students to IITs, IIMs will be examined.

IIT and IIM do not entertain foreign students.

Irani stressed the need to strengthen cooperation between IIT, Kanpur and the Royal Bhutanese University.

Irani said The two countries may explore setting up of educational institutions in Bhutan,” reads a statement from Irani’s office.
