BBIN comes into operations

While India continues to block any transportation between India and Nepal, regional agreement for free access of motor vehicles in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal comes into effect.
The four countries have agreed to allow unrestricted travel of motor vehicles across the four countries to boost economy and trade.
On November 1, first car truck from Kolkata has left for Dhaka as part of the first trial in implementing the agreement.
The cargo vehicle will travel a distance of approximately 640 km from Kolkata (West Bengal in India) to Dhaka (Bangladesh) and finally to Agartala (Tripura).
The traditional land route between Agartala and Kolkata covers about 1550 Kms which is directed from Northern West Bengal via Siliguri to reach Agartala in Tripura, with the newly opened route the distance would be reduced to about 640 Kms between the two cities.
The BBIN Motor Vehicles Agreement, signed on June 15, 2015, allows vehicles to enter each other’s territory and does away with trans-shipment of goods from one country’s truck to another at the border, a time consuming and costly process.
