House transfers PM’s power to the King

With the endorsement of the Attorney General Bill of Bhutan 2014 through a joint sitting, political leaders in Bhutan have agreed to surrender some of the government powers to the monarch.

The new act makes Attorney General answerable to the King and not purely the government. Earlier, the Attorney General was answerable to Prime Minister and the elected government.

Citing the Gyalpoishing case, when Attorney General denied filing case against the government, the parliament has resolved to surrender this authority of an elected government to King.

The new act also strips off power of the Prime Minister to appoint or dismiss the Attorney General and passed this power to the King.
