Thimphu to turn into electric car hotspot
A champion of environmental conservation, as recognised by UN, Bhutan is of late abuzz with introducing electrical vehicles in its capital city. The cleaner transport will ensure better living environment for local residents.
The initiative came unexpectedly after Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay met with the chief executive of Renault-Nissan Carlos Gohn to discuss supplying electric cars and charging system.
The government is also in talk with US motor company Telsa and invited India’s Mahindra & Mahindra towards his ambition of making Thimphu a electric car hotspot.
The city is expected to receive the first lot out of 2,500 electric vehicles by February 21 next year.
A taxi on an average uses Nu 800 worth of fuel a month but on electric vehicle the cost will come down to Nu 7 to Nu 10.
