Nepal Appoints First Female Prime Minister Amid Historic Protests

Kathmandu, September 12, 2025 – In a historic development, Nepal has appointed its first female Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, following a week of unprecedented youth-led protests that led to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and now the dissolution of parliament.
Karki, a former Chief Justice known for her anti-corruption stance, was sworn in by President Ramchandra Paudel in a televised ceremony on Friday. Her appointment aims to restore stability and address the demands of the Gen Z movement, which has been vocal against government corruption and social inequality.
The protests, sparked by a controversial social media ban and allegations of corruption, escalated into widespread unrest. Demonstrators targeted government buildings, leading to the burning of the parliament and the homes of several political leaders. Clashes with security forces resulted in at least 51 deaths and over 1,300 injuries, with more than 12,500 prisoners escaping from jails across the country.
In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Oli resigned, and the military took control of the capital, Kathmandu. Following negotiations, Karki was appointed as interim Prime Minister, with plans for fresh parliamentary elections scheduled for March 21, 2026.
Karki’s appointment is seen as a step toward addressing the concerns of the youth and restoring public trust in the government. Her leadership is expected to focus on anti-corruption measures, social justice, and national reconciliation.
As Nepal navigates this transitional period, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution and a return to democratic governance.
