Bhutanese man dies in car crash

A Bhutanese man has died after a car crashed into a tree and caught fire in Downer, Canberra on Sunday morning.

The car crashed into the tree on the median strip of the Antill St about 6am, and left debris on the road nearby.

Local news reports quote police saying a passerby helped a passenger out of the car, but the driver received fatal injuries in the crash. It is understood the passenger’s injuries are not life-threatening. Police are still determining whether the car caught fire on impact, or afterwards.

“ACT Fire and Rescue were at the scene and extinguished the fire. ACT Ambulance Service also attended,” police said in a statement.

“ACT Policing’s Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team are investigating and will prepare a report for the ACT Coroner.”

Soon after arriving Australia, PM Tobgay has asked Tshewang C. Dorji, who is accredited as Bhutanese ambassador to Australia, to travel to Canberra and help the Bhutanese community to organize for the dead body to fly back to Bhutan.

The coroners are yet to prepare the report of the dead in the accident.
