Resettled Bhutanese Community in Cincinnati Honours Senior Journalist Devendra Bhattarai

Senior journalist Devendra Bhattarai, a widely respected voice on Bhutanese refugee and human rights issues, is currently visiting the United States. During his visit, he was honoured on 27 June 2026 at a special programme held in Cincinnati, jointly organised by the Bhutanese Community of Cincinnati (BCC) and the Literature Council of Bhutan (LCOB), in recognition of his long-standing commitment to highlighting the struggles and concerns of Bhutanese refugees.

For many years, Mr Bhattarai has consistently drawn attention to the plight of Bhutanese political prisoners, the difficulties experienced by Bhutanese refugees, and other pressing human rights issues that continue to demand wider international attention. His work has been recognised for giving voice to communities whose stories often remain unheard.

The Cincinnati programme reflected a strong appreciation for his dedication and offered the community an opportunity to formally acknowledge his contribution to journalism and advocacy. Speakers at the event stressed the importance of recognising individuals who dedicate their work to human rights and social justice.

Cincinnati based senior Bhutanese community leaders, including Tara Dahal and Khem Rizal, along with GCRPPB youth coordinators Bhanu Khanal and Shrijana Timsina, among others, addressed the gathering and expressed their appreciation of Mr Bhattarai’s continued commitment and impact.

On the occasion, the Literature Council of Bhutan (LCOB) and the Bhutanese Community of Cincinnati (BCC) jointly presented an appreciation award to Mr Bhattarai. In addition, the Global Campaign for the Release of Political Prisoners in Bhutan (GCRPPB) separately presented an appreciation award, further recognising his lifelong dedication to the human rights of Bhutanese refugees, including Bhutanese political prisoners.

As Mr Bhattarai continues his visit to the United States, a respectful appeal has been made to Bhutanese community organisations, civil society groups, and related institutions across the country to consider inviting him to engage with their communities. Such meetings would provide an opportunity for meaningful discussion on the ongoing issues affecting Bhutanese refugees and wider human rights concerns.

Beyond recognition, these engagements are seen as important opportunities for education and awareness, particularly for younger members of the Bhutanese diaspora. Community leaders noted that such interactions can help youth better understand their history and strengthen their commitment to justice and human dignity.

Expressions of appreciation were also extended to Mr Bhattarai for his continued efforts to amplify marginalised voices and document key issues affecting the Bhutanese community. His work continues to serve as an important bridge between lived experiences and public awareness.

Community members and organisers have encouraged interested organisations across the United States to reach out and arrange possible engagements during his visit.
